Kaliyah Coa, aged 11, passed away as a result of the frigid temperature of the River Thames’ water, as indicated by the preliminary conclusions of a coroner’s inquest; she did not succumb to drowning. Coroner Graeme Irvine stated during a hearing, ‘The impact of exposure to cold water would have led to unconsciousness and death in a relatively short period of time.’ Coa’s remains were discovered in the river on April 13, two weeks following her initial report of being missing on March 31.
The preliminary results of a coroner’s inquest indicate that Kaliyah Coa did not drown. Following the commencement of the inquest into the death of the 11-year-old, whose body was discovered in the River Thames in April after her disappearance in March, Coroner Graeme Irvine presented the findings during a hearing on May 2, as reported by the BBC.
According to the London coroner, it seems that Coa entered the river in an effort to retrieve a lost shoe and subsequently perished shortly thereafter due to the icy water temperature.
Irvine stated, as reported by the BBC, that exposure to cold water would likely lead to unconsciousness and death in a short period.
This is consistent with initial postmortem results indicating that the 11-year-old did not drown, as reported by the outlet.
Irvine was mandated to undergo a hearing due to the ‘unnatural’ nature of Coa’s cause of death, as reported by the BBC. The court was informed that the preliminary cause of death is immersion; however, the coroner indicated that further tests are necessary.
The East London Coroner’s Court did not provide an immediate response to PEOPLE’s inquiry for comment on Saturday, May 10.
The remains of Coa were found at Maritime Quay on the morning of April 13, two weeks after her initial report of disappearance on March 31. According to law enforcement, Kaliyah was not attending school on the day she went missing and had reportedly entered the water close to the Barge House Causeway.
A witness reported observing two children at the location seeking assistance. In a statement to the BBC, Coa’s family mentioned that the 11-year-old had attended a birthday celebration and did not come back home.
The family expressed their profound sorrow, stating, ‘Our hearts are shattered, and our lives will be forever altered. We were fortunate to have Kaliyah, albeit for a brief period. Her absence will be deeply felt.’
The family expressed gratitude to all those involved in the search for Coa and requested that their privacy be honored following her passing.
Detective Superintendent Scott Ware expressed the sentiments of the family in a statement reported by Sky News, stating, ‘This tragic incident has claimed the life of a young girl who was cherished by many. Our dedicated officers will persist in providing support to Kaliyah’s family as they navigate through this devastating news.’
I support her family’s plea for privacy as they face the challenging journey that lies ahead.
