Set between Hamburg and Paris, the story begins when Ripley, involved in shady art dealings, is insulted by Jonathan at an auction. In retaliation, Ripley involves him in a dangerous scheme. He tells a French gangster that Jonathan is the perfect hitman because he is dying and desperate to leave money for his family. Jonathan, unaware of Ripley's manipulation, reluctantly accepts the job after being told his illness has worsened.
Jonathan's journey from a mild-mannered family man to a killer is central to the film’s tension. As he performs the hit and gets dragged deeper into the criminal world, he finds himself in over his head. Meanwhile, Ripley, who initially viewed Jonathan as a pawn, begins to feel guilt and even admiration for him. This unlikely bond leads Ripley to help Jonathan escape from the consequences of their actions.
Wenders blends American noir style with European art cinema, using moody visuals, long takes, and psychological depth. The film is notable for its meditative pace, strong performances, and exploration of morality, identity, and friendship. Dennis Hopper plays Ripley as unpredictable and eccentric, while Bruno Ganz delivers a poignant portrayal of a man torn between survival and ethics.
The American Friend is more than a crime thriller; it is a character study about trust, mortality, and the strange alliances that form in desperate times. It stands as one of Wenders’ finest works and a unique adaptation of Highsmith’s world
